Bethany Greenough

Level 3 - Year 1

My piece is a fashion illustration, I aimed to design sportswear including leggings, sports bra and a tank top. My intentions for this was to explore how fashion could also be a source of communicating technology in line with humans’ natural blueprint i.e. DNA, Fingerprints. Influences and research I used for this piece are mainly from artist / designers one being Lucy Mcrae for her ways of creatively exposing the human body. Secondly, Alexander McQueen for his way of tying both technology with humans as one, as presented in his No.13 fashion show designing prosthetics for an amputee model. Finally, Philips for their Bubelle garment is a presentation of a dress reflecting the inner self, displaying emotions in the form of shapes and colours. I created my illustrations with inspiration from those artists' work, using Adobe software. The patterned leggings I designed with the means to present the human DNA pattern, I also wanted to represent the way in which I feel emotions travel through the body. On the tank top I created a design based upon technology, I wanted the top to present screens and light.

What have I learnt from this course?

During my course I have learnt many essential skills that I will carry with me into the industry. Before this course I had little to no knowledge of how to use sewing machines, textile techniques, 3D or digital skills. However, I now feel I have great knowledge on all of those and fully capable of doing those things independently.

What is my advice for anyone joining the course?

Advice for anyone starting my course would be to keep practising any newly taught skills, take as many notes as possible especially when learning digitally it helps to reflect and to be persistent.
