The piece of work I have decided to submit for the online show is my music
magazine double-page spread. I recently completed this piece of work as part of the
most recent topic we have covered on the Creative Media course. The topic was
Music Magazine.
My intention for this piece of work was to create a double-page spread for a music
magazine where I have used my own article and photography. With the project, I
hoped to entertain and inform readers on the lives of musicians, specifically the band
I chose to write about Twenty One Pilots. Using the studio facilities at Oldham
College I was able to create professional looking photography to include in my work
which I feel resembles the type of band photoshoots you would usually find in an
Indie music magazine.
While creating this piece of work I took a lot of influence and inspiration from current
magazines such as Indie Magazine, which often uses vibrant and intriguing
photography as well as interesting well-written articles. While writing my article, I
researched a lot about my chosen band and read articles online which helped to
structure and develop my writing. For the main photography, I used the studio at
Oldham College. I set up the lighting with blue and red gels to create an interesting
and unique effect which almost feels like the models face is split in two, each side
emphasising a different colour.
What have I learnt from this course?
During my time on the Creative Media course, I feel I have gained many skills. Most
of all I have learned how to correctly plan out my work to achieve the best outcome,
this is an important skill to have which can help in many real-life situations both in
and out of the media sector. Another skill I feel I have developed on the course is
knowledge of cameras; what angles may work best for desired results, what settings
I should use depending on theme and location etc.
What is my advice for anyone joining the course?
My advice for anyone starting this course is to keep up to date with your work as
best as you can, planning is important to help you develop and properly execute your
ideas and being behind on this will give you less time for the actual production.
Another piece of advice is if you get stuck or don't understand something, talk to your
tutors and they will help.
